Sea Buckthorn often grows on sand dunes particularly at Pembrey Beach and Tenby South, where it carpets large areas forming an almost impenetrable barrier. It grows to a height of between 6 and 9 feet, and its small green flowers are inconspicuous and appear in early spring. The narrow willow-like leaves are 3 to 4 inches long and alternate. The shrub becomes most noticeable from September until November when its bright orange berries appear. These have a high Vitamin C content (and a very acid taste) and are much used in herbal medicine.
