Black nightshade is a small, bushy, annual plant of waste places with alternate, ovate leaves. The small flowers have 5 white petals and bright yellow anthers, similar to those of potatoes. These are followed by small clusters of round, green berries which turn to black as they ripen. The whole plant is toxic, especially the unripe berries which contain Solanine (C45H73NO15), although their toxicity decreases as they ripen.
