The Cuckoo pint (alternative names are Lords and Ladies, Wild arum, Devils and Angels, Jack in the pulpit) is a common palnt of hedgerows and woodland, flowering in early Spring. The orange / red berries can be seen from mid-summer, and grow on a short spike from 6 to 18 inches in height, which can last into winter. The sap can cause skin irritation but all parts of the plant are poisonous, including the berries which contain calcium oxalate (CaC2O4). If eaten they cause irritation and swelling in the mouth and throat.
