The Sloe or Blackthorn is a very common tree of hedgerows, producing masses of white flowers in spring, and sloe berries in autumn. These are bluish-black in colour, often with a greyish bloom and are very bitter to the taste, but milder after a few frosts. They're used to make Sloe Gin, by steeping in gin for a few months, together with some sugar.
