The Walnut is a common tree of parks, gardens and woodland and is easily recognised by its distinctive leaves. These usually consist of three pairs of leaflets, getting larger towards the tip, with one large terminal leaf. The green fruits appear in late summer and split when ripe to reveal the familiar walnut. This is the best time to collect them - if you can get them before the squirrels do, but avoid any that have started turning black.
