Shell is roughly egg-shaped, up to 5 inches long. Easily distinguished from the Otter shell by its more irregular shape, and 'gape' to one side when both valves of the shell are put together. Shell can be white, but usually dirty orange, brown or black. The left valve has a large projection near the hinge (top, left).
