Lying at a height of 1820 feet in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Llyn y Fan fawr is the source of the river Tawe. It's a peaty oligotrophic lake of clear water lying beneath the formidable Fan Brycheiniog mountain and is about 740 yards long with a surface area of approximately 25 acres. Some parking is available on a lane to the west, from where it's a walk of about 1½ miles across open and often boggy moorland. It's a good place for swimming, but leeches have been recorded here.
