Ilfracombe's main seafront beach is Wildersmouth - a beach of course grey sand and small shingle backed by a promenade. On the east side is Capstone Hill (156 feet high). The East Wilder Brook and West Wilder Brook meet at Ilfracombe, flowing via a culvert onto the beach and along its western side. The surrounding cliffs are of Ilfracombe slate, which together with the greyish sand, give the beach a somewhat drab appearance. Local facilities include a Tourist Information Centre and cafes. Dogs are allowed at all times. Ilfracombe's main shopping street is about 200 yards to the south and has a wide range of shops.
