Mowingword Bay

Mowingword Bay lies on the opposite side of Stackpole Head from Barafundle Bay, which it easily surpasses as Pembrokeshire's best beach. It's almost certainly Wales's most spectacular beach with a shore of sand, rocks and rockpools, backed by high limestone cliffs. Pinnacle Stack stands in the centre of the beach and towards the back there are cathedral-like walk-through caves - one with a blow-hole reaching right to the top of the cliffs. It's bounded on the east side by the headland of Mowingword - a popular climbing spot. Unfortunately it's also the most difficult beach to get to. Access for those without water-craft or climbing equipment involves a 400 yard low-tide swim from neighbouring Box Bay - itself a difficult beach to reach. En route is the narrow inlet of Raming Hole and a few patches of kelp to watch for.

The difficult access ensures that even in the height of summer you're likely to have it all to yourself - apart from the gulls who aren't used to visitors. One visit to this beach won't be enough!

Parking is at Broad Haven South. The photos were taken at low tide, on different days.
