Hell's Mouth

Hell's Mouth or Porth Neigwl is a 3½ mile long sandy beach on the south-west side of the Llŷn Peninsula. The shore is mostly medium or coarse sand, backed by banks of sand and boulder clay which become higher towards the north-western end. A rich variety of pebbles can be found here, from white quartz to black slates. Parking is at a small, free car park with further roadside parking available nearby. Refreshments are available from catering and ice-cream vans in summer, but there are no toilets or lifeguards here.

From the car park, beach access is a 200 yard walk along a sandy path through the dunes. Surf conditions are fairly consistent but best around mid tide, and a reef at the north-western end usually produces the best surf. Windsurfing is also popular, but it's only suitable for the more experienced. Strong rips can occur in surf conditions, and swimming can be dangerous.

The north-western end of the beach is quieter, with a small car parking area and some roadside parking just off the Rhiw road at Grid Ref : SH241285. Access to the beach at this end is a salebrous path down the subsiding boulder clay cliffs. A campsite on the clifftop has idyllic views across the bay, but its facilities are extremely basic.

The nearby village of Llanengan has a pub which serves food - seafood being its speciality.

The photos were taken 1½ - 2 hours after high tide.
